Earlier this year I had the pleasure of working with Oxford University Press in the U.K. on their All About Us progam – a six-level primary course for the mainstream segment of Spanish schools. They asked me to illustrate “The Water Well”, a cute story about kids taking initiative, showing compassion and using ingenuity to find a way to raise the water level in a dry well and help some thirsty animals. It features a cute baby hedgehog and a baby meerkat, so what’s not to love?

Turn, turn, turn…. Now that the seasons are changing yet again, and we’re getting out the winter boots and mittens, it’s a treat to revisit this fun assignment from earlier this year, for Headu, Italian producer of educational games and puzzles. The brief was really open and straightforward: create a round puzzle, divided into four quadrants, showing the changing of the seasons in the same spot year round, with the same characters.

What was tricky was that each quadrant is a different shape, so I had to make the scene work compositionally and be recognizably the same scene, in four different wedge shapes. Once I got that worked out, it was super fun to add all the cute little animal characters and details. As is often the case, I provided the file in many many layers so the client could pull out little details for the individual game cards. Not sure how the game component of this works, since the online description is in Italian, which I do not parlare. Looks like fun, though!

Chirp, Owlkids’ magazine for 3- to 6-year-olds, commissioned me to illustrate the cute story “Marvin’s Monkey Bars” for their September issue. Marvin the monkey thinks the monkey bars should be ONLY for monkeys (i.e., himself, as he seems to be the only monkey at this school) – hence the name. But after a little solo time on “his” bars, he realizes playtime is more fun with friends, and decides to call his favourite part of the playground the “everybody bars”!

The Shape Hunt (Scholastic). A picture book to find geometric shapes along a stroll in a fair with this two siblings. The main characters are two siblings. The young brother is 8 years old and should wear glasses. His sister is 12 years old. I truly enjoyed to create this book full of freely secondary characters. Building up from the scratch a whimsical fair (that was the actual word that the publishing house used as guideline) was so fun. I have made cupcake sellers in a cupcake shape stall. The popcorn corner is an actual giant popcorn cube. Smily kebab seller laughing at a boy that looks a girl who is devouring a cotton candy...even I put some portraits of friends!

I love cooking, and drawing...so it seemed just logical to create an alphabet based on food elements. These are all vector drawings with a subtle texture to add softness to the images.
