I live in a forest.
The forest I live in happens to be in suburban Portland, Oregon. I'm surrounded by houses; I happen to dislike yard work, so after 27 years in our house, we live in a forest.
My studio looks into the trees and rhododendrons that surround our house. Since I have a 'day job' as well as working as an illustrator, my office is sort of divided into 3 sections: my desk, currently littered with papers and files; my 'workhorse' computer [office manager], printer, and scanner; and of course, the telephones [2]. By the window looking out over our deck is my drafting table, half-littered with drawings. When I draw by hand, it's usually at my drafting table. The third section is where my illustration/video editing computer is located. The monitor and keyboard sits on an oak table, upon which my father had his tonsils removed in the 1920's. The rest of the table is littered with videos and reference material.
Most of my illustrations start as graphite drawings, which are then colored digitally, and manipulated as necessary to create my illustrations. When I paint in acrylics, the paintings are usually digitally manipulated in some fashion. So, most of my illustrations are created digitally, rather than traditionally.
On the walls of my office, above the shelves of reference books, are illustrations that inspire me. Some chronicle my growth as an illustrator; many of the illustrations are created by others. I have a Norman Rockwell section of a wall, highlighted by a letter to me from Mr. Rockwell.
