Julie Fortenberry has a Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College in New York. She has exhibited her abstract paintings in New York galleries, and museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work has been reviewed in Booklist, The Christian Science Monitor, the New York Times, Kirkus Review, and the Horn Book Guide for fall 2009.

She's created digital paintings for Highlights High Five, Harcourt Education, Boyds Mills Press, and Ladybug Magazine.
