They asked me to illustrate “The Water Well”, a cute story about kids taking initiative, showing compassion and using ingenuity to find a way to raise the water level in a dry well and help some thirsty animals. It features a cute baby hedgehog and a baby meerkat, so what’s not to love?  Tue, 21 Nov 2017 20:13:21 +0000 http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2759/All-About-Us-The-Water-Well/ http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2759/All-About-Us-The-Water-Well/ Gira Gira le Stagioni (Round seasons jigsaw puzzle and game) Turn, turn, turn…. Now that the seasons are changing yet again, and we’re getting out the winter boots and mittens, it’s a treat to revisit this fun assignment from earlier this year, for Headu, Italian producer of educational games and puzzles. The brief was really open and straightforward: create a round puzzle, divided into four quadrants, showing the changing of the seasons in the same spot year round, with the same characters. What was tricky was that each quadrant is a different shape, so I had to make the scene work compositionally and be recognizably the same scene, in four different wedge shapes. Once I got that worked out, it was super fun to add all the cute little animal characters and details. As is often the case, I provided the file in many many layers so the client could pull out little details for the individual game cards. Not sure how the game component of this works, since the online description is in Italian, which I do not parlare. Looks like fun, though! Marvin the monkey thinks the monkey bars should be ONLY for monkeys (i.e., himself, as he seems to be the only monkey at this school) – hence the name. But after a little solo time on “his” bars, he realizes playtime is more fun with friends, and decides to call his favourite part of the playground the “everybody bars”!  Tue, 12 Sep 2017 15:15:12 +0100 http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2704/Marvin-s-Monkey-Bars/ http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2704/Marvin-s-Monkey-Bars/ The Shape Hunt The Shape Hunt (Scholastic). A picture book to find geometric shapes along a stroll in a fair with this two siblings. The main characters are two siblings. The young brother is 8 years old and should wear glasses. His sister is 12 years old. I truly enjoyed to create this book full of freely secondary characters. Building up from the scratch a whimsical fair (that was the actual word that the publishing house used as guideline) was so fun. I have made cupcake sellers in a cupcake shape stall. The popcorn corner is an actual giant popcorn cube. Smily kebab seller laughing at a boy that looks a girl who is devouring a cotton candy...even I put some portraits of friends! I love cooking, and drawing...so it seemed just logical to create an alphabet based on food elements. These are all vector drawings with a subtle texture to add softness to the images. Little moments which makes us happy.  Wed, 27 Jul 2016 09:27:59 +0100 http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2502/Life-moments/ http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2502/Life-moments/ Chirp Magazine – Illustrations for Baby Animals Issue Earlier this spring, I was asked by Chirp Magazine to create some cute illustrations for a spread in their “Baby Animals” issue. This was fun! There are two puzzles – one asks kids to put the life stages of frogs, butterflies and dogs in order, and one has them count the eggs in the nests of various birds. I think they turned out great! Chirp’s colourful issues contain tons of innovative stories, puzzles and activities for 3- to 6-year-olds. As I grew up with Owl Magazine (Chirp’s older sister), it was very cool to see my illustrations in this magazine! Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital in Connecticut refreshed their art collection for their pediatric inpatient facility, and asked me to create four new pieces to be installed in a central hub.    Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital offers cutting-edge therapies to kids long before these therapies are available throughout the US and elsewhere. In addition to medical innovation, they also place as much emphasis on a child’s emotional needs as they do on treating the illness – evidenced by the thoughtfulness and care they put into curating the art collection.    With the guidance and coordination skills of art consultant Nancy Samotis, the art committee commissioned several new pieces (2D and 3D) on the theme of “travel/journey as a metaphor for the healing process”. The illustrations had to reflect that theme in some way, as well as provide a positive and uplifting atmosphere for the patients, who range in age from newborn to late teens.    This was a pretty wide open brief and so much fun to work with!    Here are the finished illustrations, as well as a few shots of the artwork installed. They're 36" x 30" giclees on fine art paper.   I hope these illustrations make the days a little bit brighter for the kids who spend time in this incredible facility!  Tue, 28 Apr 2015 15:03:57 +0100 http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2261/Artwork-for-Children-s-Hospital/ http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2261/Artwork-for-Children-s-Hospital/ Festive fun from the forest!  Wishing everyone a warm and wonderful holiday with lots of fun with friends and family!  Sun, 21 Dec 2014 10:22:27 +0000 http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2186/Festive-fun-from-the-forest/ http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=2186/Festive-fun-from-the-forest/ My Very Own Cat - Humpty Dumpty Magazine  Humpty Dumpty Magazine commissioned me to create 8 illustrations for a "Build-a-Book" - an activity where kids can cut out the pages and fold and staple them into a little book. It's a very cute poem about a fat cat and the way he spends his days. This was loads of fun as a I have a soft spot for obese kittycats, so it was a joy to create this chubby little character.      Wed, 04 Dec 2013 15:14:36 +0000 http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=1903/My-Very-Own-Cat-Humpty-Dumpty-Magazine/ http://www.childrensillustrators.com/agency/IllustrationOnline/id=3170/blog/post=1903/My-Very-Own-Cat-Humpty-Dumpty-Magazine/
